Strymon have finally given us what we’ve all been waiting for and it looks like it’ll deliver in spades. A multistage drive pedal called the Riverside which ahs both an analogue and digital circuit in one. Having both, creates incredible flexibility for a drive pedal, and with the quality that Strymon are known for, this could be the gain pedal to own. The first stage of gain your guitar signal hits on the Riverside is the all-analogue, class A JFET circuit. A commonly used distortion circuit for guitars that will dirty up your tone, but still retain loads of clarity and jangle. They’ve designed the JFET circuit to give you up to 20dB of analogue gain so that you can really crank up the pedal before it starts compressing and’sagging’. However, if you keep the level down and crank the gain, then you can achieve that’sag’. Once the signal has gone through the warm analogue circuit, the incredibly powerful SHARC DSP chip will add detailed and responsive distortion to match the dynamics of your playing. The Riverside will react like a tube amp and when you play quietly, the pedal will respond accordingly. When you up the intensity of your picking hand, you’ll create more distortion. It has a low gain channel for smooth classic overdrive sounds and a high gain channel for modern saturated tone, so you can set the pedal up to match your genre, and then play within that parameter. Or you can use the Favorite switch to tap dance between a high gain setting and a low gain overdrive setting. It’s like having 2 pedals in 1! We’ve touched on the fact that there’s more than one gain stage, but Strymon have actually crammed in four gain stages into the Riverside that will cascade into each other, adding more gain as you go. This will increase the harmonic response so that you don’t lose clarity or top end under loads of distortion. Ultimately, this a very versatile drive pedal that will give you access to classic sounds at your feet, but more importantly will help you carve out your own unique distortion sound. And the 3-band EQ makes it easy to match the pedal to your current guitar and amp setup. Custom cascading multistage distortion topology provides a wide range of tube-inspired drive tones. Each Neo Series pedal incorporates an advanced 32-bit microcontroller adding presets, expression, and MIDI capability. The Neo Series pedals are small but mighty! Imagine having a single pedal on your board that can access up to 4 separate preset tones with a touch of your toe. Connect an expression pedal to “morph” between two distinct settings for each preset for dynamic real-time effects. Or connect the Neo Footswitch to enable your choice of preset select, tap tempo, or start / stop the sequence in real time. All Neo Series pedals feature a simple yet powerful preset functionality. Hold the bypass footswitch to move the pedal to the next available preset, and the pedal will reconfigure itself on the fly. All knob values and the effect mode settings are recalled, allowing you to set up to four unique tones. Simply connect a MIDI controller to the EXP port on the side of the Neo Series pedal and access up to 16 presets total. The Colour Theory allows the user to sweep the Rate, Steps, Mix, and Lag controls with the expression pedal or ramp footswitch. The Defender will also work with a standard tap tempo footswitch. MIDI : The Neo Series pedals can connect to a compatible MIDI controller to control all of the pedal functions plus access 12 extra presets, for a total of 16. The USB port may also be used as a MIDI interface to your computer or mobile device. Press and hold the center button while turning the knobs to activate the alternate controls. LEVEL – Adjusts the overall output level of the Defender. The pedal has quite a bit of volume on tap, enough to overdrive your amp. DRIVE – Controls the amount of drive, saturation, and distortion of the effect. (WARP) – Adjusts the speed of the WARP control. With this control at minimum the Defender will warp between the red and blue settings instantly. With the control at maximum the pedal will take approximately 10 seconds to warp. LIGHT – Controls the treble or brightness of the distortion effect or the cutoff frequency of the filter if FLT is selected. (BLEND) – Mixes the clean signal (fully counter-clockwise) with the distorted signal fully clockwise. This is a really crucial control for using the Defender with bass or low-tuned guitars, allowing you to dial in some clean signal to increase the articulation. MATTER – Controls the bass or depth of the distorted tone or the resonance / feedback of the filter if FLT is selected. (TWEAK) – Adjusts the special effect for each distortion mode. Varies for each effect, check out the descriptions below! Select Button – tap to choose a new effect mode or hold to engage the ALT controls. The upper LED shows the distortion effect selection. OD – Overdrive with a clear midrange character. This mode ranges from transparent to gritty with a sweep of the Drive knob. Try this mode with the Blend control near noon for a great soft-clipping boost. DST – Distortion with a darker, smoother tone. Gets hairy really quickly and loves to party. FZ – Splattery, sizzly fuzz tone. Don’t even bother trying to get this one to clean up, sounds kind of like a toy robot being fed into a garbage disposal. Once you’ve selected your distortion, you can choose from one of three special effects. Any distortion effect may be combined with any special effect. Please note that the special effects only work on the distorted sound, and not on the clean blend signal. PIT – Polyphonic octave shifting, applied to the distortion signal only. The Tweak control adjusts the blend between octave down, distortion, and octave up. This effect is killer for sub-octave riffing or screaming fuzz freakouts. SPC – Space modulation using a short time delay on the distortion signal. Tweak controls the delay time from zero to a short slap-back. Try using the Warp function to sweep the delay time for manual flanger sounds. FLT – Super-tweakable resonant lowpass filter, ideal for synth or wah textures. Light controls the cutoff frequency, Matter controls the resonance or sharpness of the filter. Tweak mixes between the filtered sound and the unfiltered sound. Want to get a distortion effect without the special effects? Just select the distortion sound you like (OD, DST, FZ) and select PIT as your special effect. Hold the Select button and turn the MATTER / TWEAK knob to its midpoint. The pitch effect will be bypassed and you’ll just have dirt. Tap this footswitch to accelerate the Defender into warp drive! While Warp is active, the Defender will move to a second unique setting of your choice. Just turn the pedal knobs while Warp is active to set the Warp tone. Tap the footswitch again to return to the regular sound. ALL knob settings may be changed as part of the Warp mode, but the distortion and effect selections must stay the same. The Warp speed may be adjusted by holding the Select button and turning the Drive knob. Low settings of Warp will cause the pedal to move into and out of Warp mode instantly, while higher settings will accelerate into and out of Warp mode more gradually. The Warp footswitch to activate Impulse mode, which will enter and exit Warp mode only as long as you hold the footswitch down. Try using Warp to set two different distorted sounds for rhythm and lead, or using the Impulse function to add some filtering or space delay to the climax of a solo! The possibilities are endless, and if you engage it while flying backwards around the sun you may end up saving some whales.. The Defender features a buffered bypass using a soft-touch footswitch. The dry signal path is digital to maintain the phase relationship between distortion and clean. The bypass signal is 100% analog. To configure, power on while holding the center Select button and release when the program LEDs start to flash. Turn the Rate knob to select the function for the Neo Footswitch – Counterclockwise for sequence start / restart, center for preset select, clockwise for tap tempo. Turn the Matter / Tweak knob to set the main LED brightness. If you wish to assign the Defender MIDI channel, simply send a program change message from your controller on the correct channel while the pedal is in configuration mode. Hold the Select button to save the pedal settings. The Defender MIDI port requires the use of either a MIDI converter box such as the Disaster Area / Chase Bliss MIDIBox or a MIDI controller that supports 1/4 devices such as the Disaster Area Gen3 series. The Defender defaults to using MIDI Channel 1. HOLD THE SELECT BUTTON TO SAVE CONFIGURATION. The Defender requires a 9V DC power supply with a 2.1mm pin, center negative, 80mA. The Defender is not designed to be powered on supplies higher than 9V and does not use a battery. New JHS Twin Twelve V2 Channel Drive Guitar Effects Pedal. This item is new, in box! In 1963 Silvertone introduced the 60 Watt Model 1484 guitar amplifier. Originally a student model amplifier, the 1484 has since become legendary, hard to find, and coveted by some of the biggest names in music. From the time of its debut in the Sears Catalog until its discontinuation only four years later in 1967, the model 1484 “Twin Twelve” amplifier is considered a Van Gogh of sorts as it developed a great appreciation and worth years after being discontinued. Artists such as Beck, Death Cab For Cutie, The White Stripes/Jack White, and more recently Vampire Weekend and Coldplay have brought this rare amp to the forefront of popular music. The JHS Pedals “Twin Twelve” channel drive is the first ever all analog stomp box that replicates the classic preamp/overdrive tones only found in the Silvertone 1484 “Twin Twelve” amplifier. The heart of the JHS Pedals Twin Twelve is the discrete transistor stages that take the place of the original tubes found in the amplifier. Each transistor stage of each pedal is meticulously hand tuned and adjusted for the perfect voltage that achieves a striking similarity to the real valve sound of the original amplifier. To help achieve the weight and power of the original valve design the circuit is designed around a charge pump that internally converts your standard 9V DC Negative power up to a powerful 18 volts. This conversion gives you more punch, better dynamic range, and overall one of the best amp-like feels of any pedal we have ever offered. The JHS Pedals Twin Twelve V2 has five controls: Volume, Drive, Bass, Treble and Clean. The original amp only had Volume, Bass, and Treble. Let’s start here and explain the additional Drive control that exists on our Twin Twelve pedal. The Volume control of the pedal acts as the master volume that the amplifier never had. By design, if the Volume control of the pedal is maxed out, the pedal is acting like a non-master-volume amplifier. The TT V2 has a more refined sweep and a better “sweet spot” than the V1 had when adjusting the Volume. The Drive knob of the pedal is essentially the Volume control of the amplifier. As you turn up the Drive knob of the pedal, you get more overdrive and tube-like saturation just like you would by cranking up the Volume knob on the amplifier. The biggest difference between the pedal and the original amplifier is that you can now crank the Drive knob of the pedal and turn the overall volume down with the pedal’s Volume knob. The 1484 amplifier did not have this feature and made it at times unbearable to achieve the best cranked-up amp tones when in a small venue, small club, or bedroom situation. The Bass and Treble controls are almost exact replications of the 1484’s Baxandall tone circuit with only minor improvements that make them work more effectively in a guitar pedal format. If you have ever played a real 1484 amp, you probably found yourself cranking up the amp’s Bass control because the first 40% of the sweep was pretty useless and completely non-audible in change. On our pedal, we’ve adjusted the values within the Bass control network giving a more audible and useful control range. With the pedal’s Bass and Treble set to noon you have the very classic and true 1484 amp tone with plenty of room to expand and tweak. The Bass and Treble controls of the pedal are active and allow you to cut or add frequencies. New to the version 2 is the Clean/Dirt toggle. It allows the TT to go from a clean preamp boost to the classic growling medium/heavy overdrive. The new Clean mode removes the Drive control from the circuit and turns the status LED to blue. In this mode, you will find clean and clear amp tones with a massive amount of headroom. The Clean mode shines as an all discreet boost, amp simulator, or as an always on preamp to fatten up your tone. When the toggle is flipped up, you are in the classic Twin Twelve overdrive mode and the LED turns red. The Clean/Dirt toggle is remotely switchable using the 1/4 jack on the top right side of the pedal. The JHS Pedals AT is Andy Timmons signature overdrive pedal that gives Andy his unmistakable lead and rhythm tone. Upon purchasing a JHS Angry Charlie in 2013, Andy began using it as his primary tone and soon after got in touch with Josh Scott about modifying it for his needs. This pedal gives you all the soaring overdrive and distortion that you hear from Andy with plenty of options to craft your tone with your rig. So pay ATtention and we’ll see what makes the AT rock. Does the AT+ sound the same as the original AT. The drive channel of the AT+ is identical to our original AT pedal. No changes were made whatsoever and the controls remain the same. They include Volume, EQ, Drive, Air, and a three-way toggle for 25-watt, 50-watt, or 100-watt modes. The Volume gives you plenty of headroom to play with, while the Drive control has a wide range from high gain blues to thunderous distortion. The tone controls work together to give you the ability to shape your tone and sit perfectly in a mix. The EQ works as a standard bright/dark tone control, while the Air control rolls in top end like a presence control so you can have just the right amount of brightness for articulation and clarity. The three-way toggle gives you the feel of different wattage amplifiers. The up position is the 25-watt setting with the most compression and saturation with the least amount of volume. The down position is the 50-watt setting for a good balance of compression and openness. The middle position is the 100-watt position for tons of volume and open crunch while being less focused. Two channels are better than one! New to the AT+ is an independent foot-switchable Boost… Essentially creating a second channel and gain stage for the pedal. The boost side of the AT+ is a slightly dirty and overdriven pre-boost that allows you to hit the front end of the AT drive channel and achieve more saturation and definition for applications where you need more. Since the Boost is independent, it can be used alone to drive your amp or other drive pedals in conjunction with the AT+ drive channel. This pedal requires standard 9V DC Negative power, consumes less than 100mA, and measures 2.2″x4.8″x1.6. You can safely run “The AT” at 18 or 9 volts.
